Ordinary Magic: David Disko
Opening Reception: March 1, 5:00-7:00pm
Artist Talk: March 9, 10:30am-12:00pm
Painting what is known but not necessarily see, David Disko translates his everyday walks and outings into playful, colorful abstractions based in reality. These everyday scenes dabble between the real and surreal as Disko utilizes intense, saturated colors to create recognizable objects that seem to melt between light and shadow. The scene emerges from an assemblage of shapes generated by sinuous lines. Plants in full bloom one day and wilted the next, Prickley Pears, Mexican Sunflowers and the Duranes Ditch are subjects of Disko’s work. Painted on re-purposed canvases and panels, Disko will paint one painting upon another, occasionally allowing the former image to bleed through. Finished painting are encased in their own, unique art piece, the painting itself cascades over the edge of each custom frame to draw the viewer in.

Simplicity, an expression of freedom from pretense. In this exhibition we look at contemporary works in which the elegance of line and the composition of design are carefully executed to create abstract examples of complex ideas and techniques. Dabbling between the intentional and the unintentional, these artworks represent a line in creation between the automated functions of expression, and the intentional, yet meticulous application of decisions. We explore when drawing a squiggly line, imitating from the subconscious of the artist becomes art and subsequent, informed decision to apply color informs emotion and context.

This inspiration is drawn from the earliest existing depictions of the feminine forms as found in ancient worlds of the Near East and Old Europe, during Neolithic, Paleolithic and later periods of our ancient civilization. In these images, reflections, plane shifts, layering, masks and other symbols contribute to the perceived ambiguity of the seen and unseen.

Inspiration in Taos: Robert M. Ellis
Exhibition Dates: May 9th – June 30, 2022
The Curated Creative is pleased to present, Inspiration in Taos, by Robert M. Ellis, in conjunction with the Ernest Thompson Furniture Showroom. This exhibit is the first in a series to spotlight local New Mexico artists. Side by side, artworks are on display among beautifully handcrafted furniture representing the rich culture and traditions that set New Mexico apart. Robert M. Ellis, who originally hailed from the Midwest, moved from California to Albuquerque in the 60s . Shortly after arriving, Ellis became enamored with Northern New Mexico, moving to Taos full time following his retirement from UNM in the 80s. Ellis's paintings, drawings and etchings, feature a playful loose hand, often featuring vibrant color. Ellis, carefully juxtaposed his playful approach to the landscape by configuring his compositions into geometric shapes. His approach presents dynamic and contemporary impressions relevant to today. While in Taos, Ellis was recruited as interim director of the Harwood Museum in Taos, a position which became permanent and he held for about ten years. While director of the Harwood, Ellis secured the funding to expand the Harwood into the Museum we enjoy today. His love of the art community and making his own work never waivered and is reflected in the nearly 7 decades of work cared for by the Robert M. Ellis Art Collection Trust. The work for sale in this exhibition is kindly represented by Ellis’s daughter and Trustee, Wendy Shannon. Additional works by Ellis are available to view online and in person, visit: www.RobertMEllis.com for additional information.
